In this article we will cover an important and an easy concept of chemistry known as Solutions. Solutions are important to understand how the solutions are formed and how they behave. Let us understand in detail what do we mean by the term “solution”.
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more solutes dissolved in a solvent. A solvent is a substance in which a solute dissolves to produce a homogeneous mixture. A solute is a substance that dissolves in a solvent to produce a homogeneous mixture. Usually the solvent is the substance which is present in the greater amount than the solute. The word solution is commonly used for the liquid state of matter. A typical example is a saline solution where salt is the solute dissolved in solvent water.
Characteristics of a solution
A solution exhibits many characteristic. Some of the important properties of solution are:
🡪A solution is a homogeneous mixture.
🡪A solution is composed of a single phase solid, liquid or gas.
🡪Components in a solution cannot be simply separated using a mechanical filter.
🡪The particles present in the solution cannot be seen with the naked eyes.
🡪The solutions do not affect the light beam.
Concentration of a solution
The concentration of a solution is given by the amount of solute present in the given solution. In a given solution the proportion of solute and solvent are not equal. Depending on the proportion of solute a solution can be classified into three types.
1) Diluted solution
2) Concentrated solution
3) Saturated solution
1) Diluted solution: A dilute solution is a type of solution in which little amount of solute is present in the large amount of solvent. Therefore this solution is named as dilute solution.
2) Concentrated solution: A concentrated solution is the one in which the solute is present more than the solvent in a given solution. As the concentration of the solute is more it is named as concentrated solution.
3) Saturated solution: A saturated solution is a kind of solution in which maximum concentration of solute is dissolved in the solvent. No more additional solute can be dissolved in a saturated solution. As the solution is saturated it is known as saturated solution.
In this way the solutions can be classified. This article has explained about the basic concepts of solutions and some important terminologies which are required to understand the concepts. The topic of solutions has been clearly and deeply explained by Dushyant sir in his video lecture which covers all the required concepts about solutions.
